What is STAR?

Standing       Tall       Always       Reaching

STAR is a structured program which works to instill the core values of professionalism, leadership, and community involvement in young boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 13.

Each participant in the program is paired with specially trained Chesapeake Sheriffs Deputies who have been carefully chosen because they exhibit these core values.

What is Leadership? Leadership is a structured, one-on-one relationship between a young person and an adult. This relationship is meant to help the young person grow in a variety of important ways.

Role of a Leader:

  • To Listen
  • To question, find facts
  • Guide on career development
  • Pass on information and knowledge
  • Offer different perspectives
  • Offer support and encouragement
  • Take the lead (initially)
  • Confront difficult issues
  • Celebrate success

Throughout the year, children of the STAR Program participate in a variety of events:

  • Feeding the community
  • Community service and cleanup projects
  • Star Leadership Summer Camp
  • Sporting events
  • Educational field trips
  • Football Camp
  • Chesapeake Christmas Parade
